Use this service to determine if an iPhone has been replaced by apple.

Why do i need to know this?

if an iPhone has been replaced under warranty, it sometimes cannot not be unlocked by normal methods.
 
This is because the network did not issue the handset, so as far as they are concerned, it is not one of their handsets so they cannot unlock it.

Also if it is a replacement handset, you may be able to unlock it cheaper by using the Apple Replacement Unlock By IMEI service
